Sofa Table, nice touch

After living in small living quarters for a large part of our life,  my hubby and I were able to purchase our first home that featured large rooms.  Now,  with a sizable living room,  I can fulfill my long desire for a sofa table.  I began a search for one at the shopping malls,  private home sales and responding to newspaper ads.  My search expanded to on line sites where I found several great choices.

The spacious living room will be a challenge for our home decor ideas.  I love the idea of a sofa placed away from the wall and a table placed behind  -  they seem to go together.  The purchase of a dark walnut traditional sofa table blends perfectly with the decor and was very reasonably priced.  Shopping for other decor accents will be gradual and exciting,  but my biggest reward is finally owning a sofa table that is justified by the room size.

Use Pre-existing Elements

Redesigning a home can be an exhilarating experience; it gives you the freedom to personalize your family’s dwelling with an artistic touch that’s all your own. But the prospect can be a bit daunting as well. When you’re working from a blank canvas, the first few brushstrokes are the hardest. Rather than starting from scratch, consider implementing a few existing elements to create an entirely new aesthetic.

For example, if you’re working on the living room and you just can’t bear to part with an antique couch, make it the centerpiece. Scour local thrift shops and online boutiques for smaller pieces that accentuate the couch and its strong points. In practically no time at all, you’ll find that a uniform theme has developed. These and other home décor ideas can help you save money even as you improve your design sense.

Our home has its share of Tiffany choice lighting.  We choose beautiful and breath-taking Tiffany style chandeliers for the dining room and foyer.  Wall sconces, table and floor lamps grace our home that are true works of art that are handmade by skilled artisans.  By adding one or two odd pieces of color in our home decor ideas and bringing them together,  are effective as an accent for more interesting focal points.

After making some major changes in our home decorating with coordinate paint colors and some wall coverings,  we purchaced several new furnishings.  That was when we decided to include tiffany lighting in the mix.  They were found on line at various price ranges.  Although not cheap,  we felt the costs were reasonable when you experience the joy,  warmth and elegance they add to our home.  They are a great investment for our daily enjoyment and cherished heirlooms of tomorrow to be handed down from generation to generation.

After installing several ceiling fans in our home we realized they are a perfect part of creating the perfect home decor.  For those hot,  humid days of summer,  there’s nothing more wonderful than a cool breeze.  Fans have become so advanced,  providing cooling in the summer months and warming in the winter months.  They save up to 40% in summer on energy bills and 10% in winter by flicking a switch on the fan to enable the blades to work in reverse.  Heat naturally rises and the fan forces the the heat down so the thermostat prevents the furnace or boiler from running steadily.  We were sure to install anywhere that dampness may be an issue.

Besides being cost effective as they actually pay for themselves over time,  they add years of comfort and beauty that coordinates our home style.  We installed them in bedrooms, family room   dining and living room and also our patio.  All were purchased from on line sites that supply huge varieties to choose from and at reasonable costs.  Assembly and anchoring to ceiling can be tricky,  but following the instructions to the letter is very important if someone in your household or friend is used.  If in doubt,  then hire a professional for safety reasons.  Anyone thinking of ceiling fans,  I say go for it.  We are extremely happy that we did.

Decorative as well as utilitarian,  the occasional table offers more than meets the eye.  While some tables might seem to share a similar function,  subtle differences characterize each one of them.  Our sofa table can be used behind a sofa,  but we placed it against a wall in the foyer.  It is a great place to store keys and mail or display a vase full of fresh flowers that I do when fresh flowers are in season from our garden.  I also showcase smaLL artifacts and statuettes on top or on the shelf underneath.

Our coffee table is placed in front of the sofa.  We use it to serve coffee or drinks to our guests.  It also has a shelf underneath that is used for magazines and photo albums that are placed out of the way.  Our lamp table is small and unlike end tables.  It is a single piece of accent furniture that we display a heirloom decorative lamp.  Nearly all of our occasional tables were purchased on line at discount prices,  except for one that was a must have,  so I did pay full retail.  Our home is basically modern with touches of french provinchal and traditional that blends with our modern home decor.  We are shopping for nesting tables that will complete our table inventory wants.

I found the nicest two piece nested accent tables on line recently.  It is a traditional table set that has all the hallmarks of early 20th century sophistication that appeals in the living room area.  If your the type of person who entertains often,  then you might find these tables very handy to own as they are easily stackable when not in use.  We love them for parties,  project space and extra tabletop space for seasonal decorations.

Nesting tables offer a versatile solution for added table space that serve as a decorative touch to any area and adds to your home decor accents.  Perfect for changing rooms,  this accent offers three individual tables while taking up the space of one.  I’ve since purchased a set with three tables for added convenience that they serve.  Our daughter’s birthday is upcoming soon and I plan on gifting her a set for her home.

While shopping on line for home decor accents I found the perfect tiffany floor lamp for an area of our living room.  The style of the lamp sparked my interest due to style and color.  The added character enhanced the room and is used mainly for reading.  Diffused light,  coming from the side and over the shoulder,  provides the best reading light.  The bottom of the shade should be at eye level when seated and be wide enough that the bulb is shaded while seated or standing.  I am aware that proper light prevents eye strain and will ensure the health and well-being of your eyesight for years to come.

Our furnishings are primarily traditional that welcomes the rich style of tiffany collections.  We can never afford tiffany originals,  but what is available at reasonable prices adds charm and style to the decor.  Eventually we will purchase a few table lamps and such,  in the tiffany style, as we love the various colors and designs that blend in with almost anything.  It is amazing what the small changes do to any room and at reasonable costs.

Small rooms can feel confining and uncomfortable.  We found ways to utilize certain design concepts that fool the eye and make our rooms seem larger inexpensively.  Starting with the ceilings,  bright white is the best choice and wall colors of light green or cream beige.  Wallpaper should be confined to solid colors w/small designs if desired.  The mirrors we chose creates room expansion when hung near windows so the outdoors is reflected.  Ceiling to floor mirror has made our small room seem magically larger.

As for the furnishings,  we chose pieces that are in the scale with the room.  Slim rockers and open-back chairs,  simple sofa or love seat rather than overstuffed furnishings to avoid overpowering the space.  All of our home decor ideas were found on line.  Hopefully the day will come when we’ll have spacious living quarters,  but until then,  we found certain techniques and ideas that work perfectly with our current mini apartment.  Our family and friends provide an added bonus with their compliments of the change.

Our living room needs a striking accent chair or armchair to give the room a flair.  With so many styles,  fabrics and colors to choose from for every taste that are found in on line sites,  we finally found our choice.  We turned an empty corner into a fashion statement and at the same time created a peaceful reading area.  The new wonderful chair also needs a end table that we found for added contemporary home decor.

Gradually we will purchase additional decor for walls,  tables,  floors and a new sofa and love seat.  Much of our home furnishings were purchased at home private sales,  auctions and hand-me-downs.  We were grateful for the great cheap buys several years ago,  but they have served their purpose.  Future new purchases will be slow coming as my husband and I avoid debt.  When our budget allows,  we then make replacements of the old with careful choices that will last our lifetime.  Actually,  I’m having the fun ride of my life with the ideas found on line and the eventual final results to our home.

Does your family room design,  center around entertainment and bringing family members closer together?  More and more with the comfort of theater seating,  fresh popcorn and a surround sound home entertainment system,  it has become a perfect fit for our family.  We went a step further and added a gaming center and a wealth of special effects.  The design is comfortable,  low maintenance when it comes to cleaning,  and of course provides ample seating for all.

Including a games room as part of the family room,  turned out to be a good gamble.  We used to spend hours watching Texas Hold’Em on TV a lot,  so we took the plunge and shuffle up and deal at our own poker table.  We have a regular game night with a few friends,  shuffling a few cards,  a few stories,  sharing a few laughs and letting the chips fall where they may.  Our friendly home decor ideas came mostly from online and the rewards have been countless.  With all those positive changes,  it has enabled our family and friends to recapture the good old days when people interacted with one another more.  Great fun!
